Baldone Schmidt Telescope, a unique device with a wide field of view, the largest in the Baltics and the 12th largest Schmidt telescope in the world, is located near the resort town of Baldone. The telescope enables both direct and spectral observations of the celestial bodies. The Baldone Astrophysical Observatory is the only professional astronomical observatory in Latvia carrying out optical observations.
The main research directions: spectrophotometric studies of carbon stars, studies of small Solar System bodies, studies of nonstationary processes in stars, processing of Schmidt telescope photographic plates to create digital images.
